Portland is my town. It’s where I have chosen to make a life. When I came to Portland 20 years ago I never imagined that I would meet so many talented people, run my own art gallery, or be making books, but that’s what’s so special about this place. Reinventing yourself is possible here. Nobody cares where you came from; all that matters is what you do once you arrive. In this way, Portland is a catalyst and it rewards courage and independence. I doubt that any of this would be possible anywhere other than Portland.
In accordance with this city, I don’t run my gallery in a typical fashion. I have never been a top 40 person so why would I choose artists in that way. I am looking to challenge the famous or established artist, not just be another stop on their nationwide tour of galleries.
Most importantly, I want to find new artists and cultivate their abilities and move them along toward a career. Hellion is a long term relationship gallery based in reality. Hopefully you see a different side of a familiar artist or discover a new one through my completely selfish curation.
